Recently launched Computer Game GTI4 rocked the gaming world. Concerns over the negative effects of violent video games on children are growing day to day. But, now a ray of hope can be seen. A US professor has helped develop a new game that teaches youngsters the principles of peace and non-violence.Professor Melanie Killen from the University of Maryland’s Department of Human Development spent months working with interactive gaming veteran F J Lennon and his team – including animator Dave Warhol – as they developed Cool School: Where Peace Rules. “Cool School is a whimsical, interactive game designed to teach children about conflict resolution in a lively, fun, entertaining, and developmentally appropriate context,” says Killen, who was brought in as a developmental psychology consultant to create the conflict scenarios and conflict resolution options in the video game. Here all the things have life in them. Be it Showcase or tables or windows, all alive! The player gets to experiment with different solutions to conflicts. Cool School runs on both Windows PCs and Macs (OS X), and is available as a free download from www.curriki.org.
