Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the arrival of second version of iPhone, i.e. iPhone 3G.
This next generation gadget has many new features included, like fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store.
Though the iPhone 3G is thinner at the edges than its predecessor, the phone measures a hair thicker (0.48 inches versus 0.46 inches) in the gut. The other measurements are the same except that it weighs just the slightest bit less (4.7 ounces versus 4.8 ounces).
New Features:
3G:
iPhone 3G uses a technology protocol called HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) to download data fast over UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks. Email attachments and web pages load twice as fast on 3G networks as on 2G EDGE networks.
iPhone 3G meets worldwide standards for cellular communications, so you can make calls and surf the web from practically anywhere on the planet. And if you’re in an area without a 3G network, iPhone connects you via GSM for calls and EDGE for data.
GPS Maps:
iPhone 3G finds your location via GPS or by triangulating your position using Wi-Fi and cellular towers. It also finds points of interest by keyword: Search for Coffee parlor and will show you the coffee shop near by.
You may get directions to wherever from wherever. View turn-by-turn directions or watch your progress with live GPS tracking.
Integrated App Shop:
The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it’s accessible from just about anywhere. Browse categories, do a keyword search, or take a look at recommendations. Then download and install applications directly onto your iPhone.
Microsoft Exchange server support:
It supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, delivering push email, calendar, and contacts. And it gives mobile users secure access to corporate resources with Cisco IPSec VPN and wireless network services with WPA2 Enterprise and 802.1X authentication.
Apart from these this new gadget offers facilities such as:
- Better email management
- Contacts search
- View more attachments
- Scientific calculator
- and support of 16 new languages. (Chinese and Japanese included, but not Hindi... Pity for us)
