Not Happening

Many people consider Manoj Syamlan as Ram Gopal Verma. He is known as one film wonder. With his latest flick, he proves it once again. The Happening is not happening for sure.

He takes issues like Earth Destruction and turns them into moronic, self-indulgent escapades that lessen the impact of real events by making them look ridiculous.
The Happening lacks the screenwriting finesse and narrative. Beginning with a nod to the real disappearance of honey bees, and the dire consequences the lack of bees would have for the planet, Shyamalan seizes on two of the most urgent phobias of the moment: terrorism and looming environmental collapse of our ecosystems.

The opening sequence shows people in New York City committing mass. But for what reason? Unclear to us. I think it was unclear to the scriptwriter as well. The military thinks it's a terrorist nerve gas. The scientists believe it could be a natural event, like the mysterious decline in the honey bee population. Here comes our Hero: Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg). Elliot knows a thing or two about "The Scientific Method" and just before he dismisses his class due to an "event in New York City."

Elliot, his wife Alma (Deschanel) and his good buddy Julian (Leguizamo) decide to get out of town to escape the danger zone, but once they hit the sticks, they soon realize the threat isn't confined to urban areas.

The horror flick is not working for most of the moviegoers. There no twist and turns. Just a flat path. The viewer knows from the first frame what is coming next. Moreover the concept of the film is bit confusing. It seems like it is personal thought of Shyamalan.

The idea of the film would have been developed into a masterpiece. But it is left unclear. All and all the film ends with unsatisfying note. The viewers need more. The idea not working here and moments not happening.
