Modern Olympic Games began at Greece in 1896. But at that time the Olympic Games did not has an official flag. After an interruption of eight years due to World War 1, the Games returned to action in Antwerp which had been severely bombarded during the war. This Olympiad was historic. The five ringed flag and oath made their first appearance during these games.

An athlete Hal Prieste stole the flag from the pole. But he returned it to the IOC in 2000.
