It is good news for those patients who find it difficult to inhale medicine through inhaler.
Inhaling a drug in aerosol form is an increasingly common way of treating cancers, AIDS, diabetes, and asthma. However, inhalers are notoriously inefficient because at best, they deliver 20 per cent of their load into the lungs and at worst; they deliver less than 5 per cent.
The rest gets left in the mouth and throat, or gets blown back out into the air – particularly if the user’s intake of breath is not well synchronized with the aerosol jet.
Now, Researchers at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, USA, have developed a new computer-controlled inhaler that is far more effective than the traditional one.
The smart inhaler that measures air flow around its nozzle to determine the best moment to release a powdered drug such that it achieves maximum penetration into the lungs.
So now, a patient can rely on computer and be assured of inhaling complete medicine.
