Terrorism now-a-days is a soft subject for Bollywood film makers. Almost all run to make a film on it. But don’t they need to study well before pitching for a subject as hard as Terrorism.
MISSION ISTAANBUL is a good project turned a nightmare. There is action, there is drama, there is Osama look a like, There are stunning shots but some thing missing in whole film. And that something is everything, the soul.
The Story:
A promising journalists Vikas [Zayed Khan] bags an assignment from Owais [Suniel Shetty], who heads a controversial Istanbul-based news channel Al Johara (it sounds like Al Jazeera, right?), makes him an offer to head the channel. Fighting to get a divorce with his wife Anjali [Shriya Saran], Vikas finds this job a mood changer.
But little does Vikas know that the decision will change his life forever. Owais is killed and Turkish commando Rizwan [Vivek Oberoi] tells Vikas that if he decides to quit as well, he would be bumped off as well.
Pick points:
Cinematography is excellent. The first half of the movie is fast and furious. We travel from India to Turkey, then Afghanistan and back to Turkey. The characters are well-established; the script is laced with incidents that seem straight out of newspapers. Shriya looks good. Vivek and Zayed come up with competent performances.
Weak points:
There are many. First the logic is missing. How could two super duper heroes eliminate entire army? Isn’t it sound too typical Bollywood style? Songs are needlessly inserted and tunes are forgettable.
Finally:
MISSION ISTAANBUL is a good thriller with a body without soul. Apoorva Lakhiya is a tenanted director but perhaps he needs to learn, there is something called script.
