It is the modern day Malgudi Days. A film which is driven by characters. No high drama, no nonsense, just a pure and light comedy. WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR takes you to a village where you would find simple people, a letter writer, a goon, beautiful women, an army man and so on.
Story:
Welcome to Sajjanpur is a story of Mahadev [Shreyas Talpade] (The film was titled as “Mahadev ka Sajjanpur” earlier) is an ambitious man who wants to become a novel writer. But he finds it easier to make a living by writing and reading letters sitting next to the post office.
His ability to write persuasive letters makes him popular with the largely non-literate population of the town. Aware of this power, he soon uses his talent to manipulate people leading to many unusual and amusing situations.
Pick Points:
As I said, this is a light comedy film. Veteran director Shyam Benegal did a fantastic job. We know him for his dark and art films, but this film proves that he has hold on comedy films as well. Every actor including Shreyash and Amrita Rao has done a good job. They both look cute in the film so as their love story.
Weak Points:
The only problem with this movie is unwanted songs, which halt the speed and momentum. Otherwise, the movie has no major flaws.
Finally:
It is one of the finest movies of Shyam Benegal. A must watch.
